Singapore Sunday: City on Fire

After I graduated college in May 2010, I moved abroad almost immediately. I chose Singapore on a whim — I knew nothing about the place, it had never been on my list of countries to visit, and I didn’t plan on staying very long.

I stayed for fifteen months.

In October 2011, I left Singapore with a serious relationship, some of the best friends I’ve ever known, experience working in reality television, and countless happy memories of life in the Lion City.

Singapore changed my life for the better, in ways I couldn’t have even imagined possible.

———

I always regretted not writing about my time in Singapore, and now that I’m in Paris, I can feel those memories slipping away. So today I’m starting Singapore Sunday, where once a week I will post something from my archive about the country, whether it be just a single photo or a full feature.

My time in the Little Red Dot was so much more incredible than I thought it’d be, and I want to share my experiences with others so they know what I’ve learned:

Take a chance on Singapore. You’ll be surprised.

Of all the photos I took in Singapore, this is one of my favorites: A burning sunset over southern Singapore, as seen from my apartment on the 44th floor. I always loved coming home to sunsets, and evenings like this made me love living in Singapore all the more.

Tanjong Pagar, facing south. At night we could see the fireworks on Sentosa, and on a clear day we could see Indonesia!
