What a difference a week makes.
When I left for Russia, Paris was still gray and wet, with bare trees that looked as though they’d been put on pause, the reset button long forgotten after winter ended.
Then of course, the moment I leave — bam — SPRING. I arrived back in Paris seven days later to an almost unrecognizable city: one full of flowers and sunlight and green; oh my goodness, just so much green.
To commemorate the spring opening of the public parks — the “grass no longer resting”, so to speak — the talented Lauren organized a giant lawn party or Pelouse en Fête so that we could finally celebrate the sun on our faces and the grass between our toes.
(I’m actually not a fan of stepping anywhere near open grass due to a childhood allergy, but I’m told this is a feeling most people enjoy come springtime.)
I’d never been to Parc Monceau before this weekend — a travesty given how long I’ve lived here, but even more so once I realized how perfect the lawns are for picnicking, playing, strolling. It’s not just a jardin, this is a proper park.
Everyone carried along picnic baskets and Lauren even brought homemade pavlovas, introducing us all to this fabulous meringue-and-fruit dessert from her native Australia.
Contentedly full from wine and other nibbles, we laid out in the sun for hours just chatting, laughing, humming along to a French friend’s guitar- and ukelele-playing, and welcoming spring to Paris.
The afternoon sunshine also proved the perfect chance for me to practice my portrait photography. Below are good friends Carin and Diane, and new friends Meg, Olivia, and Anne — the latter three being Paris bloggers I’ve corresponded with, and wanted to meet, for ages (and who I had no idea were coming, proving once again how small the Paris expat circle really is).
Friends not pictured but who were also in attendance: Milsters, Sugared & Spiced, and Ylenia.
Hard to believe just 36 hours earlier I’d been in Russia, living a completely different life — the afternoon was so idyllic, it felt like I’d been lying on the lawn in Paris all weekend.
Hopefully the warm weather is here to stay — if this is any sign of things to come, I’m looking forward to finally enjoying springtime in Paris.
PS: what happens when you get a bunch of bloggers together? This happens.
Annnd then we all ran home and wrote about it. For more picnic photos:

April 22, 2013 at 21:56This looks like so much fun… and honestly more like something that would happen in San Francisco than Paris! Those pavlovas look amazing by the way.

April 22, 2013 at 22:41Oh that is glorious green. We’re still pretty brown here although I’m seeing some signs of life here and there. I’m looking forward to the day to lay out a blanket in a park and enjoy the sunshine!

April 22, 2013 at 23:18I was so sad to miss it especially since Parc Monceau is in my neighborhood and every morning while running there I kept thinking… “almost time to sit on the grass!” The picnic looked dreamy and I’m so impressed with the little touches that Lauren added! Glad you’re back safe & sound.

April 23, 2013 at 01:03Wow, spring looks so gorgeous in Paris! Spring picnics are the best. We got spring all of a sudden in Barcelona as well. One week it was all gray, then the next everything was bright green.

April 25, 2013 at 19:38I bet you all were saying ‘about time’ like us folks in Paris too! Better late than never, right?

April 23, 2013 at 19:33those pavlovas!!!!! I’m pretty sure I could eat one on my own.
I love your cute blogger outings… and that you all blog about them immediately afterward :)

April 25, 2013 at 19:39I definitely could have, and then I would’ve promptly gone into a happy sugar coma.
Like Lauren said, if an Aussie makes a pavlova and no one blogs about it, did she really make a pavlova? ;)

April 23, 2013 at 23:23I adore these photos. I’ve never been to Park Monceau before either, but it looks absolutely gorgeous. Adding that on my check list of places to go. Those pavlovas also look amazing.

April 25, 2013 at 19:39Jackie you must go! It’s such a nice place, I had no idea Paris had parks like this.

April 24, 2013 at 02:21As you know, I have been enjoying the heck out of Asia, and certainly was happy to skip the blustery winter blues back home this year, but I do think in the long run it would be really hard for me to live long-term in a place that didn’t have distinct seasons (and no, wet & dry don’t count)! Autumn is my absolute favorite, but based on your photos, I wonder if Paris in the Spring is possible to beat! Looks like y’all had an excellent day out!
edna
April 25, 2013 at 19:40Same same. Singapore was such a mind warp with the no seasons thing…winters are brutal for sure but they make me appreciate spring so much more!
