Realistic Resolutions for 2013

Making resolutions for 2013 has been tricky.

Last year I moved to Paris just as the year was beginning and I had all sorts of grand plans for the year, so my goals were easy to articulate.

But this year is full of uncertainty. Things I can’t talk about yet — but the bottom line being I have no clue where I’ll be, or what I’ll be doing with my life, six months from now. I could be in Italy, Thailand, or some country that hasn’t even popped onto my radar yet.

However, I love making New Year’s resolutions, so I’ve nailed down a few that are manageable this year no matter what happens down the line.

Let’s do this.

Respond to emails within a week

I am notoriously, atrociously bad at replying to emails. Unless you have a serious emergency or catch me in a particularly productive mood, it will take me weeks to respond. (Apologies to any of you who have already experienced this.) I’m tired of starting off nearly every email with, “Sorry for my late response…”, and the subsequent feelings of procrastination guilt, so this year I’m resolving to stay on top of my inbox.

Travel to at least three new countries

Due to my currently unknown future, this could either be incredibly easy or difficult to achieve, depending on my next job and location. But even if I only get to one new country, I’m okay with that so long as it’s in a region I have yet to visit — Southeast Asia and Western Europe are no longer strangers to me, so I’d like to branch out: preferably somewhere in Eastern Europe, the Balkans or even northern Africa.

Move to a new country

Whether I stay in Europe or move back to Asia is yet to be seen, but I am 99.5% sure I will no longer be in Paris by the end of the year. While I’m already devastated just thinking about leaving my friends (as well as what that will do to the blog readership — I’ll be sad to see the Paris fans go), I have high hopes wherever I go next will be just as exciting…and possibly a bit cheaper.

Post at least 12 times a month

Pretty straightforward. I’m aiming to post often, not only to keep the site current but to finally cut down some of my dreadfully long backlog of posts and photos.

Go one month alcohol- and meat-free

I was pescetarian for three years, yet despite how healthy I felt, gave that up when I moved to Paris: no way I was missing out on steak and frites. Similarly, I went without alcohol for most of my life but gave that up when I turned 21 and moved abroad permanently. I’d like to go one month without alcohol and one without meat (and perhaps one without either, if I can muster that much will), just to see how it affects my energy levels and overall health. Relatedly, I’d like to do more research on the Affordable Care Act, since I’ll no longer be on French healthcare after I finish my job in Paris later this year.

Talk to strangers

I’m a shy extrovert. Meaning, I am incredibly sociable — so long as someone else makes the first move. I am not a first-mover and have to give myself pep talks before I have the courage to start up a conversation with a stranger. This year I resolve to talk to more taxi drivers, waiters, people standing next to me in line…anyone who looks like they have a story to tell.

Organize more group gatherings

I live to be a Connector. For me it’s not enough to make new friends wherever I go, but I also have this insatiable need to connect everyone I know.

In Singapore, I was always organizing a dinner or barbecue or party to introduce new friends to old. But in Paris it is so damn hard to get a group of people together without planning weeks or months in advance to suit everyone’s calendars. I hate seeing friends, who I know would get along, not even be cognizant of the other’s existence. It’s like we’re all living in bubbles, co-existing in Paris but never bumping into each other.

After a year of countless one-on-one coffee dates, I will pull together more group dinners and outings and I will get my various social circles together this year. Once I break those bubbles and know my friends are also friends with each other, I can leave Paris happy.

Anyone else have big plans for 2013?

ps- I am also working on being more extroverted. We can be awkward together.

I’ve never heard the term “shy extrovert”, but I guess that’s what I am too! I find it so hard to talk to strangers, but if someone else approaches me, it doesn’t take long for me to warm up and get goofy (as you well know!).

Can’t wait to see what 2013 has in store for you, Edna! Hopefully Tony & I will make it out to Paris before you depart for your next new home, but either way, we’re excited to hear all about your adventures!

    Hi Edna,

I stumbled across your blog because my husband has been offered a job in Singapore, we are deciding whether we should uproot our life in Sydney and move over there. I don’t know too much about the place. We have two young children 5 and 2 and my son is just about to start school!

Anyway I have been enjoying your blog immensely!

Happy New Year Edna! Exciting to think of the unknown ahead, also a bit daunting. Many adventures await you! Great list of resolutions though just reading them felt overwhelming. I’m sure you’ll manage fine. Hope to see you at one of your Paris gatherings soon!

Happy New Year Edna. Amidst the wave of “goals and resolution” posts in my Reader this one struck a chord because those goals ARE so acheiveable. I like that they are well thought out too, not just the usual resolutions. The email responding is something I need to resolve to do better at but maybe I will just see how you go with that first ;) Good luck!

The connector thing is really cool – I’d like to think I am reasonably good at that and I love doing so. You definitely won’t lose my readership in your move and I’m excited to see where it brings you. Really great, admirable goals! And I definitely recommend the Balkans. You can hit 3 countries, easily, there. I did a 10 day trip once through Croatia, Montenegro, and Bosnia & Herzegovina!

I’m on day 9 of a month without alcohol and it feels great! I lived with a vegetarian for three months last year and wasn’t cooking any meat at home, so I’m actually doing a bit of the opposite this year: trying to eat a bit more meat and veg as part of a paleo-based diet. We’ll see how it goes–I’d still rather just eat some cottage cheese and avocado most nights :)

That’s great! I find I always feel much better when I cut meat out of the diet, so the harder of the two will definitely be going without a pint or glass of wine (especially in Paris!)

I should probably add a few of those to my list. Of course, I doubt I’ll go a month without alcohol or meat (even if both are rather minimal at this point). We’ll see how talking to strangers goes for me on my trip next week (strangers in my neighborhood are more than just a little strange to talk to).

I applaud you for choosing realistic, doable resolutions! Because I have found from experience that “Lose 20 pounds,” pretty much goes out the window January 2 :-)

I’m terrible at email turnaround too. I have a friend who just responds immediately, the minute she gets something. So much pressure, but I think that it one way to do it!

Thanks Daisy! Yes I’ve learned over the years if I make broad sweeping resolutions with no measurable results they don’t last past January :)

I have a love-hate relationship with people like that — I love getting my answer right away but I hate how guilty they make me feel for not responding as quickly as they do!

Really enjoyed reading this post Edna because it’s forced me to reflect on how I’ll shape my own resolutions for 2013. I especially loved your “talk to strangers” goal and the way you described yourself as a shy extrovert. I’m often the same way and always wait for someone else to make the first move. This past year I’ve tried using the mantra “be brave” to put myself out there and think I’ll have keep it on my 2013 list!

Great resolutions, Edna! I could pretty much apply these to my life right away! I also really want to move to a new country (outside Europe) in 2013, and explore new neighboring countries from there…. I’m just not sure where I’ll end up at :) And I loved that term “shy extrovert” – I can so relate it!

I also have a hard time talking to strangers or even new acquaintances. My mind just goes completely blank and I can’t think of a single thing to say! Then, of course, after they’ve gone I think of all sorts of questions I could have asked. I’m interested to hear how this works out for you. Please share any tips or strategies you figure out!

This looks like such a great list of goals for 2013 and regardless of where you’ll be, I’m sure it will be an exciting year nonetheless.

I often dream about giving up alcohol and coke (coca cola that is) but then the husband comes home from work and a cocktail is just so darn good. I should really work on weekday drinks – that would probably be more realistic.

In any case, Happy New Year to you!

Meeting new people is one of the hardest things for me, too. You’d think it would be easy after moving 10 times but I am way to awkward for it. Anyway, this talk totally changed my life/understanding of introverts: http://www.ted.com/talks/susan_cain_the_power_of_introverts.html

Love your resolutions!! The emailing thing should definitely be one of mine! I’m horrible at responding right away! (I think I have a few of yours saved to my “must get back to” box, about guest blogging??) Eek!

I’m also thinking of going meat-free for a while, I think it would be a good energy cleanse, especially now that it’s winter and I’m feeling sluggish. The beer, however… err, I live in Ireland!!
