Singapore Sunday: Old Housing, New Housing

A view I’d often see as I walked through Tanjong Pagar, my old neighborhood in Singapore. The colorful old shophouses on this street have mostly been turned into ethnic restaurants — several of them Korean, oddly enough — and a plethora of bridal shops.

In the background is the Pinnacle@Duxton, a seven-block, 50-story behemoth that is actually public housing — though the most expensive public housing on the island, to be sure. The Pinnacle is where I lived for most of my time in Singapore, and I loved it for many reasons (which I’ll dive into in a separate post), but definitely in part because it was impossible for me to ever get lost finding my way home!

The next time someone complains to me about public housing being SO UGLY, I am going to show them this picture.

I can’t say that I like the Pinnacle. Not only is it modern, but it makes me sad to think of all of the old housing that was knocked down to build it. That said, your views must’ve been tremendous. Will look for your post discussing the neighbourhood now — and hope to see more soon on IRELAND!!

Oh, well then you’ll be glad to know Pinnacle was built on open land — no knocking down of old housing required! And yes, the views were fabulous :)

I’ve never been to Singapore, but I remember seeing some impossibly large housing in HK that looked borderline depressing because it was just so gray, kind of falling apart, and there was always a lot of laundry crammed onto the tiny veranda allotments.
